How much storage space is available on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 out of the box?

On the matter of efficiency, Microsoft Windows is quite a memory and storage hog and as we know, just because it says "256GB" doesn't mean you'll get all 256GB available to you.

One of the problems with using basically the same OS on your tablets as on your desktop and laptop computers is the amount of storage space that is consumed before you've even opened the box. Microsoft says:
"System software uses significant storage space. Available storage is subject to change based on system software updates and apps usage."
The Surface Pro 3 has apparently been "optimized" to utilize the following storage space:
  • For a 64 GB unit, 36 GB is available out of the box.
  • For a 128 GB unit, 96 GB is available out of the box.
  • For a 256 GB unit, 211 GB is available out of the box.
  • For a 512 GB unit, 450 GB is available out of the box.
I'm not certain why the higher the capacity for storage the larger amount of memory Windows 8 uses, but perhaps it's scaling up some cache because it knows there's more storage/
